Tips to Protect Yourself Against Holiday Fraud

  1. Only shop on websites you trust. Be cautious about clicking on website ads from merchants claiming to have a huge “sale”.

  2. Make sure you are only purchasing items on a secured Wi-Fi connection. Do not put your card/account information into a website on a public owned computer (such as one at your local library).

  3. Be sure your devices stay up to date with the latest app, browser updates

  4. Check your accounts regularly. You can use our Mobile App by going to the Google Play or Apple Store and look for Upstate FCU. If you do not currently have Home Banking, you may enroll by going to our “Login” button our website home page. You may also call our 24/7 ARU automated system at 864-332-6372 or toll free 1-866-711-3505

  5. Check card devices for skimmers. Don’t be afraid to tug on the insert where you would put your card to make sure it doesn’t feel funny or come off. You can also check devices when shopping. Most cards now have EMV Chips, so you need to insert your card. If something looks funny, tug on the card slot or report it to the person assisting you.

  6. Setup alerts using our UFCU Cards option in our Mobile App. You can setup locations where your card can be used, turn your card off and on, restrict transactions to a certain merchant type, set up transaction limits and schedule alerts for certain transaction types.

  7. Try to use Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay etc. where available. This option will send a one-time token of your credit card information. Even if the token is intercepted by fraudsters, your card information cannot be retrieved.

  8. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t leave your wallet, purse bag etc. in your vehicle or sitting alone in a shopping cart.

  9. Have packages delivered to your work or to a family member/neighbor who may be home all day.

  10. Don’t use public USB charging stations (such as the airport), these can also be skimmed and can cause you to lose personal information, passwords and card info. If you’re traveling this season, be sure you bring an AC charger or a portable battery pack.
